Week 41: A WEEK OF MIRACLES Hello my friends! what an insane week we've had. I dont know how to fit it into one email that anyone would want to read lol! lets just start strong :) Monday night we had our first lesson with Alex the car guy. we taught the plan of salvation and it seemed like it went really well!! unfortunately we havent been able to get a hold of him since... so prayers for alex the car guy!!  another huge miracle, our friend michael is an ordained baptist minister. which means that its so fun to talk about the bible with him. (cause hes nice about it) so as long as we've known him we've just gone over and prayed with him, we havent really taught him. but this week we decided to be bold and ask if he was interested in hearing what we had to offer! and HE SAID YES!! such a miracle! so on sunday we went and taught the restoration and it was such an awesome lesson. we hope for amazing things!!  Tuesday was a crazy day. we went out to find this inactive lady ...

The Book of Mormon Can Be our Shield ¡Hola mi familia y a mis amigos! This week is the last week of CCM! Next week I will be emailing you from the amazing country of Paraguay! I can not tell you guys how excited I am to get out there and to start serving. I know that the Lord has prepared me for this moment my whole life and that he has given me amazing examples and the Book of Mormon to help me along the way. This week was very spiritual and very challenging with my Spanish. My companion and I have been able to teach lessons to our teachers and that has been so amazing. While it is challenging to speak in Spanish on the spot and make mistakes it has allowed me to grow so much. I have been able to force myself to memorize lessons and memorize so much more Spanish. Truly has been a blessing to teach. Then this week we had two amazing devotionals. I just love our devotionals so much and they will definitely be one of the things I miss the most from the CCM. I learned a lot about the...

Week 40: alex the car guy   helloooo my friends!!! this week has been a wild one!  we have been outside walking and talking to people A LOT because we're trying to just be spirit lead and talk to everyone and ill be real.... it sucks. i hate it big time. i dont know why but it just makes me so nerrrrvousssss. BUT! we are doing it anyways and God is blessing us for me stepping out of my comfort zone. (Sister Ballard loves it) Because this week! We were calling a ton of previously taught people, and then sister ballard said hey lets take a lap around our complex. So we did. and low and behold. no one wanted to talk to us. mostly cause it was ONE BILLION degrees and no one was outside. but as we were walking we looked through buildings and saw a guy working on a car. and i immedietly had the thought to go talk to him and it was pretty clear that sister ballard did too. but i was like BRUH. i know NOTHING about cars what do we even say. well... we went anyways. when we got ...

saca esas cucarachas de tu casa! Alternate title: yall don't seem cult-y....  We will explain the alternate title first and yall can figure out the other one im sure.  this week we had tradeoffs! so i got to go on campus with Sister Foister. and we had some MIRACLES! And this was one of them. so we were going to go play soccer with some people they were trying to teach but it looked like it might rain so they cancelled on us :/ so we had some free time. we picked out three people that we could go visit. An old lady, and two young girls. we ended up decided against the old lady cause we thought she might be asleep cause it was later. but as we were about to leave the house sister foister said she just kept feeling like we needed to visit the older lady!! And so i was like okay lets do it! but then she felt like we couldnt go without something. so they happened to have some cake in the fridge so we cut a piece of cake and took it with us. we got there and it was an apartm...

Missions are Gifts ¡Hola mi familia y a mis amigos! The days and weeks just keep going faster! I can not believe that I have been a missionary for a month. This truly has already been one of the most amazing experiences in my life and I can not wait to get into the field and serve for the next 23 months. Our schedule is still the same: go to class everyday and learn a lot about the gospel and learn a lot of Spanish. Everyday I am learning new phrases and words and trying my best to speak with others. I have been able to do some activities for our class where we have to go bare our testimony with a Latino. That can be very intimidating but everyone I have talked to has been so nice and always gives me the best advice. I finally got my flight plans to Paraguay yesterday! I leave Mexico at 10:30am on Monday the 29th and we fly to Panama first and we have an hour layover in Panama then head to Paraguay! I am so excited and while I have loved my experience here in the CCM and learning...

Words Matter Another week in the Hood has gone by so fast! It's hard to believe I've already been on my mission for 2 months. This week we had zone conference where everyone in the mission got together and listened to President and Sister Haymond speak. I learned that God's words and Christ's words must become our words. As we read and memorize His word and place it deep into our hearts, we truly become converted to the gospel.  Some highlights - I spoke on Sunday about prayer and learning God's will in the english ward. I had zero time to prepare, but God made up the difference! I opened my mouth and the words just came! It was the coolest experience - Had another lesson with Diana!! Her faith is so strong and I can tell she already believes everything, she just needs to realize what it is and get her husband on board.  - Finally met Brother Hokanson who is an absolute icon! He is our ward mission leader and just so so diligent at his calling. We had ice cream an...

Take your Cs A recent favorite quote: "nobody's going to bring you a casserole because you couldn't find a parking spot." We could make that statement in a hundred similar ways... because your coworker was short with you, because the wait at the post office was 30 minutes, because your cat coughed up a hairball on the carpet (again).  (Okay, sometimes your ministering sister shows up with a casserole just because. But still.)  The quote is from Dr. Samantha Boardman who suggests "it's this accumulation of everyday things that... build up and take the biggest toll on our physical and our mental health." She suggests a simple formula for countering the "everyday things" -- The 3 C's: Connecting with others Contributing to something beyond yourself Challenging yourself in some way Probably not a revelation here, but a good reminder. Get your C's! What we’re talking about Jen Hammond will lead our Sunday RS discussion of Elder Patrick Kea...

Follow your "bings" Hola hola amigos y familia!! Week 2 in the Hood was absolutely amazing! We had intercambios with Sister Caffrey and Sister Olsen. Sister Caffrey came with me and Sister Everitt and she introduced us to the chocolate milk at Dutch Bros which is dangerous haha. It was so fun to do missionary work with someone a little bit newer  I've seen so many small miracles this week! One of them being following our "Bings". We listened to this BYU devotional called "Promptings of the Holy Spirit" and it talks about always following the Holy Ghost no matter what the outcome may be. I learned that sometimes the Holy Ghost speaks in the smallest ways, in just a thought to visit someone or do something a little bit different. By following these Bings this week, we were able to find two new people in very random ways who are prepared to hear our message and be better instruments in God's hands! So pray for these people, the Congers and Diana, t...

too funny not to be shared. sister petersen hates hugs. so this is me saying goodbye to her at transfers. f-l-a-t-t-e-r-i-n-g Turtle Bread week 38: ...be nice. ft snoop shout out to uncle rob for the song that gets me through it sometimes.  this week was a little tricky for me self esteem wise. i think we all have those days when "being nice" seems really hard. Those days when everything we do seems to be wrong, and all that we look like could be better. theres always someone with more memorized scriptures, better at starting conversations with random people, seemingly more in-tune with the Spirit. Or maybe someone just has cooler shoes, more money, or a happier looking family. We all have these days, we all have these things. We are all sons and daughters of God. Each of us. We all have divine infinite worth. Its easy to believe that on paper. but when it comes down to it and you're looking in the mirror thinking hmm... maybe i SHOULDNT have eaten all 10 of those tacos...

It's gonna be a hot one!  The forecast suggested we'd be in the high 90s. It was just right for Thursday's pool party / Relief Society Social... Lot of you came to the Duncan/Manwaring Pool for a fun night and great food. We'd like to thank our RS Activities Committee for all their hard work and the Duncans and Manwarings for letting us use your amazing pool and pool house! It was amazing!! What we’re reading This week our Come Follow Me reading is a lot of Job: 1–3; 12–14; 19; 21–24; 38–40; 42, “Yet Will I Trust in Him.” Maybe just take on the whole book, starting with the overview provided in Guide to the Scriptures . "...consider what Job knew about God that enabled him to continue trusting, despite his suffering and unanswered questions." Looking for a Summer-Sendoff service opportunity?   Welcome to "the hood" Hola hola everyone!!! Bienvenidos from Portland! It's been a little while so I'll give some updates 1. A mission rule is that I can only message immediate family on Facebook, so if you want to contact me please do it by email!  2. I left the MTC and my district which was so so sad because they had become like family to me, but I'm so excited to see how there missions go because they are going to do great things! 3. I had to say goodbye to hermana mapes my compaƱera (triste), I know your killing it out there in Tempe hermana mapes!! 4. Was out and about traveling and doing missionary work the day I left the MTC for almost 24 hours! I was so tired by the end of the night, but it was so awesome. When I was on the plane I got to talk to the lady next to me about Jesus and her entire life story which was cool. I've learned as a missionary, people will literally tell you everything and anything jaja. 5. Met my mission presidents the Haymonds ...

¡Hola mi familia y a mis amigos! Another week of MTC is under my belt. I can tell you that I am ready to go to the Mexico MTC. I will be flying out this Tuesday morning and I should be arriving that night. I am really ready to just start really diving into the Spanish language and learning. I am also super excited to finally meet my companion and my district. Being in online classes with them throughout these two weeks has been so fun but I am ready to meet them and get to know them. I have heard great things about the Mexico MTC and I am very excited to experience them for myself. I started my week by going to three farewells this last Sunday. It was so cool to see all my friends experiencing the same things I experienced the week prior. I am very excited to hear about their missions and also compare our amazing experiences. This week was a lot like last week. The same schedule of a morning class, lunch break, then an afternoon class. That is what I did from Monday through Frida...
