Sister and Elder Duncan: 1/10/23
Happy New Year!
Aloha Dear Family,
Wow, where to start? Christmas was so different not being home with all of our family. New Years was a grand celebration here in Laie. I have never witnessed such lawlessness in my life. I mean in a town where fireworks are illegal, they started going off at around 5:00 and then at midnight they completely exploded and didn't stop. We sat in front of the temple and listened to five different bands play until the count down.
Last Sunday we had an experience with one of our ward members that touched my heart and reminded me of why we are here. A young man from South Korea named Tim Kim who has become one of our adopted kids, he announced that he was returning home. He has finished school and an internship. He shared how he came to Hawaii all alone and found a new family, and his two best friends Jeb and Yi. We have watched these three and we have become really good friends. After the meeting we approached Tim and told him how much we were going to miss him. He bowed his head and said, thank you Elder Duncan. Then he turned to Stacy and bowed his head and said: thank you Sister Duncan, and started crying, then I started crying. We all hugged each other, and I told him no matter where we are, our home is his home.
Again, this experience as we all stood there together with four Americans, Korean, & Chinese, crying together about how much we are going to miss our friend. I love being a missionary. The kids that are here are so humble and kind. I'm so grateful for their examples. My life will forever be changed for the better because of our mission. We have just tried to go and do what our Savior would do and be on His errand....
We are grateful to our Heavenly Father for His son Jesus Christ. We are so grateful for Joseph Smith who helped restore the gospel and translate the Book of Mormon for us to help gather Israel in these latter days. As we have been studying the Book of Mormon, I have felt the spirit so strong and want to share its message with all of God's Children.
We hiked out to the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse. We also were able to attend the Temple, and go to dinner, with our friends and new Honolulu missionaries Elder and Sister Whiting. So much fun!
May God Bless you all until we meet again!
With Much Love and Aloha!!
